Thracian fortresses on the ridge

On all high points of the ridge, from north to south (Wikipedia):

  1. Atia
  2. Bakarlaka
  3. Lobodovo Kale
  4. Malkoto Kale — the only one methodically excavated (1973–1977).

Continuity of exploitation

A striking feature of this district is the continuity of copper mining for ~6,000 years — from the Chalcolithic (~5th millennium BC) through Thracian, Greek-colonial, and modern industrial periods, to the 1995 closure. Few mining landscapes in the world show such duration. The deposits were economically viable across radically different technological and social regimes because the near-surface oxidation zone (malachite, azurite, chrysocolla, native copper down to 15–20 m) was easily smelted in antiquity, while the deep hypogene veins (to ~1,000 m) fed modern industry.

The project

A case study of subproject A01 of the Tübingen SFB 1070 “RessourcenKulturen” (ResourceCultures Collaborative Research Center), investigating the traces of ancient mining in the hinterland of the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The ridge Medni Rid (older Turkish name Bakarlik) is the focus.

Background & motivation

Objectives

Systematically map all installations of pre-industrial mining in the Medni Rid area and date them via surface finds. Initial results confirmed active use of the copper deposits especially during the period of Greek Black Sea colonization by Apollonia Pontika (Sozopol). Numerous burial mounds and smaller settlement sites attest to dense settlement around the mountain, including in prehistoric times.

Why Medni Rid matters for Chalcolithic studies

The deposits are of particular importance for interpreting the supply structure of the Chalcolithic tell cultures due to their geographical proximity to the large tell settlements in NE Bulgaria. The Black Sea may have served as a maritime transport route. Interestingly, no tell settlements are found in the immediate settlement vicinity — only smaller, single-layer settlements where metal was processed.
