Ornithology
Medni Rid is a site of ornithological importance. About 172 bird species have been recorded on the ridge.
Migration importance
The ridge is an important stop for migrating storks and pelicans after they cross the Gulf of Burgas from Cape Emine (the easternmost point of the Balkan Mountains). This makes Medni Rid a key node on the Black Sea migration flyway.
Key nesting species
Medni Rid is among the nation’s foremost nesting sites for:
- Middle spotted woodpecker (Dendrocoptes medius)
- Olive-tree warbler (Hippolais olivetorum)
- Spotted crake (Porzana porzana)
- Yelkouan shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan)
Significant populations
- Barred warbler (Sylvia nisoria)
- Ortolan bunting (Emberiza hortulana)
Context
The ecological value of the ridge is closely tied to its position on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast, the Black Sea flyway, and the relatively undisturbed oak–hornbeam–lime forest cover (see 02-geography/medni-rid.md).
